The Jeffersonian Settlement
The Jeffersonian Settlement is Peter Banks’ name for the post-revolutionary American political order in which the opening of trans-Appalachian land created a mass class of voting smallholder farmers who broke Federalist dominance and set the terms of national politics for the following decades.
Banks uses it as an era label in his presidential rankings: the settlement of the frontier produced an electorate that did not share the instincts of the urban, educated Federalist elite, and the politics of the early republic followed from that demographic fact.
